You know how I feel about bags. I love them, but they are hateful in their prices.
I love this bag a lot, and even though it is not $1000, I still find the price hateful.

Boutiques, boutique hotels, boutique film distributors. If ever a word became hollow through over-use, it’s boutique. And I don’t think this one can change it’s fortunes with a simple re-naming (small store? mini shit hotel? vanity arm of giant film company?) I think it’s time for something new.
I cannot stay in boutique hotels anymore, so I have reverted to old people hotels. In fact I think I would rather stay in a Motel 6. And if Sundance is any indication, the American indie film has become a parody of itself, churning out quirky hits for college co-eds (cue the Velvet Underground).
And last but not least, there is the actual boutique (this is , however nominally, a fashion site after all). There are so many, and they carry the same lines (I can’t even look at filippa k any more) so they no longer offer an option to anything, they have by default become the chain store.
It has become a hollow concept, so it’s time to kill it. What do I propose instead? Not sure. I love Liberty of London. I love when someone operates a store out of their garage. I love old timey hotels where people call you Miss. I love films of all kind, but maybe people just need to screw the distributors and release ‘em on the internets.
Hell, maybe I’ll even do my part and open a bed and breakfast.

I can’t stop looking at this dress. I love it.
Even though I was slagging Balenciaga just two posts ago, I quite liked the fall 2007 stuff, especially the school coat with the fur collar that you always see that Olsen twin in (not sure which, maybe both?)
Even though, at half price, it is still out of my price range.

Last night I watched The Heart is a Lonely Hunter. You can say whatever you like about that movie but you have to admit that Alan Arkin is amazing. What a fox! And Sondra Locke and Cicely Tyson look like they came straight out of an APC ad. Shift dresses, kerchiefs, men’s shirts, and a mini belted trench that Sondra wears at the end that is fantastic. I wish I could find some pictures.
Did you know that Alan Arkin was in a band called the Tarriers? He just gets better and better.

There is a crisis: Rich people have lost their way.
I had a theory a while ago that with the democratization of “tastefulness”, it would become harder and harder for the rich to define themselves as rich. So my theory was that the rich would start buying and wearing ever more absurd things to remove themselves from the general “tasteful” fashions of the every woman. I thought this theory was really going somewhere with all the absurdist shoes coming out from the big names, the ridiculous silhouettes from Balenciaga, and the inside out outfits from Marc Jacobs (see below).
A sort of “you look really goofy, you must be rich” thing.
But alas, I look at these pictures from the Richard Prince/Louis Vuitton bag launch (gag), and I’m not sure what’s happening. I kind of feel as though these ladies look like how my Mom would dress if she were invited to an “arty” event.

Tannis Hegan is one talented lady. I think I would love to own her handmade ballet flats and wood handled bag. Really nice finishing and great styling on the website. It’s nice to see such professionalism from a local designer. I think she’s selling herself a bit short with her store choices though. I mean no offense but she should aim higher, her goods are worthy of more interesting retailers.
